Welcome to Golden Gloves Boxing Gym, Shanghai’s only dedicated boxing gym based in the heart of the Jing’an District.
You won’t find the grim, solemn or unfriendly atmosphere you often find in professional boxing gyms. We want people to feel like they are welcome. Most of Shanghai’s white collar boxers train in this gym and we have a number of professional boxers that use the facility outside of class hours.
Our goal is to share the sport of boxing in China and make it accessible for all. Everyone is welcome.

Train with the absolute best boxing coaches in Shanghai. Each Golden Gloves coach has been boxing for at least five years — many since childhood.
For Chris, boxing has played an important role in his life as he was raised by a middleweight champion of China. His father, Xiong Wei, brought him up boxing. Chris came into his own in his 20’s when he became Shanghai’s Boxing Champion for 4 years in a row. He was trained by the Chinese National Team and has been training boxers for over 10 years now. Chris has a direct and conventional approach to training, making sure even seasoned boxers re-learn and master the basics correctly.
Raymond stems from a rich background of general training in martial arts and health fitness. He holds a black belt in karate, trained from 1993-1996 and has served in the army from 1997-2000, in special troops. Raymond then continued his career as a fitness coach from 2001-2005, and was awarded 4th Place as Mr. Fitness in 2004. He started boxing in 2005, has taken part in many amateur fights and now assists in coaching Brawl on the Bund boxers since 2011.
Baj has been a coach at Golden Gloves since 2013 encompassing six Brawl on the Bund and Shanghai Fight Night events. He gained his coaching accreditation in the UK and subsequently put it into practice there, before coaching in Shanghai. He has learned from some great trainers in Shanghai, Thailand and the Philippines. Most recently he was in the boxing mecca of Cuba where he was embedded in a gym for over a month learning their unique approach to the sport. Baj approaches boxing through rigorous physical conditioning combined with a strict technical grounding.
Opening a boxing gym has been lifelong goal of Shane’s. He started boxing during his university days in London, then again in Shanghai with friends in 2007 when Scott Wright (also a former boxer) started running classes twice a week in his photography studio for former boxers and newbies alike. From there, Shane trained Shanghai’s first batch of white collar boxers. Seven years later, Golden Gloves and the White Collar events have laid the foundation for boxing as a commercial sport in Shanghai. He has one goal: to get as many people taking part in boxing classes and watching boxing events as possible! “It teaches discipline, respect, self awareness, is fantastic stress relief and amazing for your health.”
In his heyday as a young boxer, Alfonso was the Golden Gloves Champion of Mexico. Now an instantly recognizable face on the Shanghai boxing scene, Alfonso is one of the gym’s livelier characters with an upbeat and enthusiastic approach to training. One of the owners of the gym, Alfonso can be found in the gym training up both guys and girls of all ages and sizes. Warning: loud salsa music is playing during his classes.
